What is a memory box?

Imagine going to the hospital for a peace of mind check…just to put your mind at ease that your baby is doing okay.  Maybe you’re sent to labor and delivery from a doctor’s appointment.  Maybe you go for an entirely different reason.  Regardless, you’re likely not prepared to hear those devastating words, “I am sorry but there is no heartbeat”.

A memory box provides families with items and resources to help make the most of the time that they have with their baby while in the hospital.  It provides tangible items to take home to remember their baby by.  It provides items that their baby touched, wore, was photographed in.  Possibly the only baby-specific items that the baby had during the short time the family spent with him/her in the hospital.

Memory boxes can be a helpful tool as the family goes through the initial stages of grieving and in years to follow.  It may be too painful for a family to open and go through initially, but feedback is that memory boxes are a family’s most prized possession.  There is something so sad, and yet special, about holding that blanket their baby was wrapped in.  Seeing the hat that the baby wore.  Being able to remember that short time they had with him/her.

The memory box also provides appropriately sized burial attire.  For babies smaller than standard baby clothes come in, this is so important.  Every baby deserves to have something special to wear.  The process of delivery to going home to burial happens so fast.  Having a thoughtfully hand-made item can help take a burden away from a family.

Finally, the memory box provides something to hold when leaving the hospital empty handed.  After the earth-shattering experience, leaving the hospital without a newborn in arms is such an upsetting experience.  The boxes even include a stuffed animal as something soft to clutch to walking out of the hospital.
